Volunteering as a Friends member at these events, will help the Valle de Oro NWR directly.  Each hour of volunteering translates into additional funding for the Refuge from the Fish and Wildlife Service.  Volunteer hours also benefit the Refuge and Friends group directly for receiving grants funding.  Each hour can be used as “in kind” services when applying for grants. Guide Workshop

    Wednesday, August 2, 2017

    8:30 a.m. - 4: 30 p.m. [at Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge]

The Bosque Education Guide is an interdisciplinary curriculum about the Middle Rio Grande Valley ecosystem. The curriculum provides classroom-based and field activities for students grades K-12. For the central activity, students construct a model of the Middle Rio Grande and then manipulate the paper and cloth pieces to demonstrate human impacts over the last two hundred years. Later, they "restore" the ecosystem. The curriculum is downloadable here:

Are you interested in donating your time to help with the Golden Gala event set-up, staffing registration/silent auction tables, or event clean-up on August 18th?

Contact Aryn LaBrake at or 505-750-3383 to discuss volunteer opportunities.

    Donate a Silent Auction Item!

The Friends are preparing for the 2017 Golden Gala, and we are seeking items for our auction and door prizes.  We bet you have something to donate, and this is a great and easy way to give a little extra to the Friends!

Are you an artist, hobbyist, or crafter?
    Think of holiday gift buyers!

Do you have a skill to share? Like to bake for others or take friends on nature hikes?
    People love to purchase experiences!

Do you own or work at a retail establishment?
Gift cards or certificates are always great auction items!

If you have any ability to request donations of tours, backstage passes, experiences, or services - please especially look into those options. You could also consider donating a special service or talent you may have. Often these experience oriented items bring in high bids during our auctions and they usually don't cost a lot of money to the person donating; therefore they make a big impact for the Friends.

    Some examples for consideration include:

    Dessert of the month
Week at a time-share or cabin
    Lessons including Music/Art/Sport/Cooking/Photography
Small construction project (example: bird houses)
Afternoon High Tea (for a birthday party, etc.)
    Wine tasting

Tour of City or Local Attractions
Party Bus to Brew Pubs (get pub to donate beers)
    Lead a Hike
    Camping trip
    Tax preparation
    Financial advice
    Pet/House sitting
    Yard maintenance, grass mowing
    Themed dinner for 6
