Paseo del Bosque Trail Extension Project:
As the first Urban Wildlife Refuge in the Southwest, Valle de Oro NWR emphasizes access for all, and promotes alternative and multi-modal transportation opportunities for its visitors and for the environment. Friends of Valle de Oro NWR is working with local agencies including Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque, US Army Corps of Engineers, Middle Rio Grande Conservation District (MRGCD), and Albuquerque Metropolitan Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA) and advocating for an extension of the Paseo del Bosque Trail southward approximately 3 miles from its current terminus at the South Diversion Channel to Valle de Oro.
The Paseo del Bosque trail is emerging as a corridor of environmental education and recreation, from Alameda and Bachechi Open Spaces to the north, the Bosque School, Rio Grande Nature Center, Tingly Beach and the BioPark in the middle, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Mountain View Elementary to the South. The Trail is already lauded nationally as a tourist attraction; extending it southward would enhance the tourism, revenue and recreational possibilities as well as provide an additional education element by connecting Valle de Oro with other community resources along the Trail. In addition, this Trail extension would enhance the City of Albuquerque’s proposed 50-Mile Activity Loop by adding a southern leg, would represent a major step toward implementing the City Bikeways and Trails Facility Plan and also the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) Long Range Transportation Systems Proposed Bikeways Network. A southward Trail extension is also an implementation of the proposed 500-mile Rio Grande Trail running through New Mexico from Colorado to Texas.
Eventually, the Paseo del Bosque Trail extension will connect with a planned perimeter trail around the Refuge and along 2nd Street, forming a loop which will reconnect with the Paseo del Bosque Trail going northward.
