Bird and Nature walks

Every 3rd Saturday of the month Valle de Oro NWR is now offering 2 separate guided bird walks- one for the beginning birdwatching enthusiast, and one for the more advanced birder. The walks will be structured depending on participant turn out and time of year. Since birds and other wildlife are most active early in the morning, it is our goal to start within an hour of sunrise. Start times will vary depending upon the month, so please check the website for updates.

The Beginner's Walk will concentrate on basic bird identification and becoming more familiar with the local species, their behavior, and habitat associations. Participants will also learn about the natural history and ecology of other wildlife inhabiting the refuge.

The Advanced Walks will focus on learning to identify birds by their songs and calls. There will be awareness and deep listening exercises, as well helpful, proven techniques designed to help the participant take their birdwatching skills to the next level.

The length of the walks will average about two hours, but may vary depending on season, weather, participant interest and level of ability. Advanced birders please bring a daypack with water, binoculars, and a pen and notebook. Beginners bring water, binoculars if you have them, and a bird id book is helpful if you have one.
